FREEDOM TO FALL

.
Behind the blood and fangs Ozzie Wright is one of the nicest chaps you could ever come across. I've always appreciated the fact that he doesn't try to overly edit out the act of falling in his sections of surf films... Always a refreshing take of reckless abandon and freedom when most surf flicks bend towards showcasing an illusion (which in my filmmaking, as hard as I try, I'm also guilty of) of athletic "perfection".

Below is a recent interview with Ozzie about the ongoing kickflip contest thang:

"showcasing an illusion"... great way to put it.

A good observation from someone so intimately involved in the surf media. Although I doubt that I have ever done an air (intentionally) there was a variation on the fly away kick out (years ago, pre leash) where the goal was to launch yourself along with your board. Enthusiasm dwindled when we started coming down on upward facing fins. There is something I try these days which is to start the wave on my board, jump off at a likely spot and body surf the rest of the way. On the right wave its lots of fun. Caution the last time I did this I was wearing a leash and my board came around to smack me in the face.

doped youth is pretty funny aussie humor. i like the fact the wright detaches himslef from the masses. it'd be cool though if there wasn't the volcom connection -it seems to cheapen the kid. he's skilled though -from all the arial antics to super long barrels.

ras,

yep, ozzie is definitely an open minded free thinker. as far as the subject of volcom goes... i welcome the sharing of your honest thoughts and perceptions, though all i can really speak of is the history of my own experiences as someone that has been in a creative relationship with volcom since 1992— all of which has done nothing but enrich my life both in terms of the all the kindred spirits i've met and the creative freedom that i've had, and continue to have there. in 1992 no other surf company probably would have looked twice at the stuff i was making, so i'm thankful.

peace and respect,
