BS! ACCORDING TO KENVIN & KIDMAN

.
.
Is BS! one-dimensional-shortboard-hero-worship-surfporn? Hardly. The film is layered, multi-dimensional, funny, entertaining, and in some sequences very beautiful. The surfers are intense but refreshingly candid, relaxed, and humble. Alternative surf craft enthusiasts may be guilty of contempt prior to investigation in regards to BS!, but they are missing out on a thought provoking visual treat full of chuckles and subversive wit. The editing is superb and the music resonates in all the sequences, in some cases with an almost mind altering intensity. On the other hand, hardcore performance porn junkies won’t be disappointed: there is some serious ripping in this film. If I were to recommend a “longboard” film to a “shortboarder” I’d say watch The Seedling. If I were to recommend a “shortboard” film to a “longboarder” I’d say watch BS!.
.
—RICHARD KENVIN
.

.
.
That Mitch Coleborn surfing is perhaps the most incredible surfing I have ever seen. He surfs like he wears straps. Incredible, even in the big windy stuff. They look like a nice bunch of kids to work with. Dusty really had the same style as his Dad which was really cool. That big wave footage was incredible. The Nor Cal stuff was great too, nice style. Ozzie is so classic, it’s no wonder he keeps breaking bones in his body. The whole film was super watchable, well paced, edited beautifully, great music. I hope people enjoy it, the surfing will blow their minds, blew me out."

BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER vs. SPACE INVADING vs. SILENCE IS GOLDEN

.
.
On a bike ride...
.

.
I was pedaling by this guy...
.

.
I wondered how far he was going with his heavy load. I almost did what I usually do in such instances: keep to myself and move on. But I decided to get over the mental hump that usually renders me silent and hollered over to him, "Where ya headed?" He hollered back in a joking tone, "To hell! I wanna see my ex-wife again." I complimented his wit with a laugh, pedaled on...
.
and soon came upon this man...
.

.
I was curious how he lost his leg. But even coasting on the wind of a fresh mental victory, I couldn't get over the voice inside that told me not to bother him. The voice that warned me not to be a space invader. I passed by him in silence, pedaled on...
.
and stopped to ponder this...
.

.
I moved on and found a gathering of drummers...
.

.
Where I saw this woman enjoying herself as she watched a newly walking toddler bouncing to the beat.
.

.
The drummers disbanded and I headed back home the way I came.
.
I came across the man with the missing leg again. He was off his crutches leaning against the path railing gazing out to sea. I found myself stopping next to him for a wave check.
.

.
But the truth is I had ulterior motives. The truth is my curiosity was still nagging at me. I quietly watched the waves for a few minutes, then asked, "How's it goin'?". He turned to me, replied, "Alright." in a tone that communicated as politely as possible that he wanted to be alone, and he turned his attention back to the sea. I was struck by an internal lightning bolt and the resulting thunder that followed inside my head was, "I'M SUCH AN ASSHOLE!!!" I ditched all intentions of asking him about his leg, quietly watched a few more waves, then said goodbye and pedaled away ashamed that I allowed my selfish curiosity to interrupt what may have been his one moment of peace in the day, possibly the one moment he was free of thoughts about his loss.
.
A mile or so later, a 4-ish year old girl, standing in the sand alongside the path, was making a fun activity out of waving at all the people jogging and riding bikes past her. She waved and smiled at me. I was reminded that sometimes a silent smile and simple wave of the hand is best, that sometimes talking is unnecessary.

"WHEN I SEE A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO PUT MY WIRE, I CANNOT RESIST."

.
.
In a 1974 clandestine operation, Frenchman, Phillipe Petit, with the help of a few close friends, set up a tightrope (steel cable) in the cover of night between the very tops of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers (1,350 ft high). A little after daybreak, Phillipe walked out onto the wire where he spent more than an hour mesmerizing people as he playfully taunted the cops from the wire before finally choosing to complete his crossing to the other side:
.
.
.

.
.
.
The documentaty film, MAN ON A WIRE, is well worth seeing for the years of planning, training, friendships and committment that went into pulling it off... Especially when considering the challenge of secretly getting a 140 foot steel cable stretched between the Twin Towers with the hands of just a few men was an incredible feat in itself.

TYLER'S PONY

.
.
My Hydrodynamica White Pony (#2) was on loan since last March with Tyler Warren and John Smart for as long as they needed it for the making of the TYLER WARREN EXPERIMENTS. I got it back last weekend. Tyler liked it so much he shaped one for himself. Below is a video of him riding the Pony he shaped. I think it's safe to say his works good enough that he won't be missing mine:

WAVE SELECTION

.
.
Not a lot of takers this morn'. I guess you know it's crap when the pelicans insist on flying high above the stink. An hour or more bobbing 'round in the mess and not a one did I see show even the slightest interest in descending to the sea.
